Protools 7.3.1 For Mac Problem
I recently purchased a new MacBook and also purchased ProTools academic 7.3.1 to accompany it. At the time, I was running Mac OS X 10.4.10 and using the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. I was working in the program doing some editing when I tried to save. The HD-only 7.2 upgrade enabled the support of HFS+ drives with the use of a third-party program called Mac Drive, but now Pro Tools 7.3 for Windows XP supports recording and playback of Sessions directly from Mac-formatted (HFS+) drives using the Mac HFS+ Disk Support option.
Protools 7.1.2 in the box but looks like an updater disk to 7.3.1 which I likely installed is also in the box. Thanks for the help man, I have years of songs I made which I cant get to. Could reinstall?
I think if you upgrade your system protools will not work but if you clean install your computer and reinstall protools it will work. I have absolutely no problems whatsoever running PT LE 7.3.1 on my Macbook Pro with Leopard 10.5.1. In case anyone is still wondering about this, I can state with total certainty that Pro Tools 7.4 is DEFINITELY NOT working right on Leopard. Trying it with a small undemanding project is not a good test. I've tried a project that has 18 tracks of various kinds (audio, instrument, aux) and probably ten plugins, which plays back fine on Tiger, on a mere Mac Mini with 1 GB of RAM. On a Mac Mini with Leopard and 2 GB of RAM, PT 7.4 says 'You have run out of CPU'.
Making a platform stable is all about sticking with it and making it stable. If you just want a 100% stable DAW out of the box then trash the computer and buy a roland VS1880 or whatever their making these days. Kontakt CPU Spike Be sure to really manage your sustain pedal action when using kontakt in Pro Tools. I mean going as far as to manually atomate sustain in front of notes in 64th note and 32nd not dips to allow the kontakt engine time to drop notes and pick new ones up. If you don't have a lot of ram this will help you bigtime. I've found it to be the main cause of my problems and the convolution verbs tax your systme hard core as well.
Update Well alot has changed scence I created this post.Heres an update for you guys about where im at with kontakt and protools. So I ended up upgrading to 3 gigs of ram, not 5.I installed the ram into the second card of the macpro so now both cards have ram slots occupied. I noticed an instant performance boost in my entire system that I was very pleased with. I ended up reinstalling my OS downgrading from 10.4.9 to 10.4.8 and also downgrading protools back to 7.3 from 7.3.1cs2.

Because at this point im getting a little frustrated about how long it is taking Digidesign to produce new drivers and software for Leopard, and im not even the one having problems.
I just wish there was an easier way of knowing that you have the latest versions of the plug-ins. One other point is that the Digidesign EQ II or Dynamics II plug-ins are now installed by default into the Plug-ins (unused) folder, which you will find next to your Plug-ins folder. If you need them to open an older Session, simply drag them back into your Plug-ins folder, with Pro Tools not running, and when you next run Pro Tools they will be back. Version 7.3 has brought a raft of improvements to both HD and LE versions, and also adds a number of previously HD-only options introduced with 7.2 to 7.3 LE.
It came to the point where im waiting about a minute for protools to start playback and when it does finally start.either it runs fine untill I stop playback and ry to start it again or the cpu spikes instantly and playback stops before it starts. I know that this macpro can take just about anything I can throw at it.Im definitly starting to think that NI didnt get the universal binary update right.and kontakt UB is just buggy. Im curious to hear what everyone knows about this issue.Because I ran kontakt on a single amd athlon processor in windows runiing over 20 instruments at a time with no issue. So in my mind this macpro should make kontakt its B1tch. Kontakt is suppost to be the center of my softsynth rig,And with this kind of issue it makes it real hard. I just think they didnt get it right for a UB quad processor machine.
Also new to LE are the following: * Real-Time Display Of Waveforms During Recording Audio waveforms are now displayed whilst recording in Quick Punch mode. This is great: I always missed the confidence of seeing waveforms created when I was in Quick Punch mode and so I didn't always use it when I should. Now I have no excuse! * Preserving Folder Hierarchy When Saving A Copy Of A Session You can now preserve the relative arrangement of a Session's files stored on separate drives or in different folders when saving a copy of a Session, by checking the Select Preserve Folder Hierarchy option in the Save Session Copy dialogue window. When the Preserve Folder Hierarchy option is selected, the main folder for the Session copy will include sub-folders for each drive or folder in the original Session.
They are the Signal Tools signal level and phase meter — which is now called Phase Scope in the plug-in menu, for some reason — and Time Shift, a new time compression/expansion and pitch-shift plug-in. Both of these plug-ins have been around for a while, but the 7.3 upgrade finds them bundled into the main software package. Time Shift can now be set as the default plug-in for the TC/E Trim tool in the Preferences. * Enhanced Editing Of Fades Pro Tools 7.3 LE now allows for greater flexibility in editing Regions that contain, or are adjacent to, fades. Fades can be moved or nudged on tracks, independently of their contributing Regions. Moving or nudging fade-ins or fade-outs reveals or hides audio as the fade is moved from the edge of a contributing Region. Moving or nudging crossfades changes the overlap point of the contributing Regions.

Pro Tools 7.3.1 For Mac Problem
You know NI hasent got kontakt right yet.For PC,PPC OR UB,My issues are Ram and UB is still so new that all these companys just havent got it right yet.MacPro users are living in the future and waiting for the software developers to catch up to the technology were using. When I first got this computer I loaded up protools and everytime I tried to open it my macpro would kernal panic.I was like damn! ProTools is doing this! Digidesign screwed up bad in 7.3.1. But I come to find out that my new mac pro will not run protools while im using firewire 400 and 800 at the same time. I could have eaisly said 'F protools,it doesnt even work.It just crashes my computer everytime I try to open it' But instead.I troubleshot the problem till I got it working. Now its stable.BUT KONTAKT ISNT.Read what n8 wrote. He upgraded his macpro to 3 gigs of ram and kontakt still doesnt run right somtimes, and im about to go to 5 gigs of ram to see if that works.
Greg thats true to an extent.Actually usually when you think its protools messing up its some other conflict with the computer. Most people dont want to take the time to troubleshoot problems.they will just say 'screw it,Im going back to what I know and what works for me' Which if it works for you, then more power to ya. But me personallly,I have been using protools scence 5.1 and havent had stability issues untill now.8 years later.when I bought the MacPro.

Can't wait for Pro Tools 7.4.1 - when it comes out someone let me know! When I upgraded to Leopard I erased my hard drive and did a complete clean install after that I installed 7.3.1 and it works.
I installed Leopard last night and after updating PACE drivers, my Pro Tools LE 7.3.1cs5 still does not open. It stalls during the loading screen when it gets to the DigiRack plug-ins. I've read in a couple of other threads elsewhere that if you displace the plug-ins (i.e.

I was also instantly pleased to see that 99% of my trouble with kontakt had gone away.
There is a comprehensive list spread over eight pages in the What's New In 7.3 LE PDF guide. * Shuffle Lock Mode This little feature will save many a tear from being shed. In some situations, it is important to stop yourself accidentally entering Shuffle mode in order to ensure you do not inadvertently move other Regions on a track while editing. To enter Shuffle Lock mode from any other Edit mode, Ctrl+click (Windows) or Command+click (Mac) the Shuffle button on screen.

This will now select every note of that pitch on that MIDI or Instrument track. You can also select and play a range of notes on a MIDI or Instrument track by clicking on a key and dragging on the mini-keyboard. Alt+click (Windows) or Option+click (Mac) plays the notes without selecting them, and you can use Ctrl+click (Windows) or Command+click (Mac) to select or deselect notes, and to make non-contiguous selections. Shift+clicking on the mini-keyboard extends or contracts the range of notes selected. * New Track Heights Digidesign have added two more track heights to the list of options.
You can now force Digibase to re-link files that are missing from your Session if you want to be able to link to a substitute file that does not have a matching filename or Unique ID. To force re-link an audio file, its file format (WAV, SDII, AIFF or MXF), sample rate and bit depth must match those of the original file; equally, to force re-link a video file, its format (Quicktime, Avid, MXF or OMF) and frame rate must also match those of the original file. * Mouse Scroll Wheel Enhancements Some of the key commands for scrolling with a mouse scroll wheel have now changed. To continuously zoom horizontally in the Edit window, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) while turning the mouse scroll wheel. Holding Alt+Shift (Windows) or Option+Shift (Mac) continuously zooms audio waveforms vertically, while Alt+Start (Windows) or Option+Ctrl (Mac) zoom MIDI tracks. To scroll the contents of the Edit window or Mix window horizontally, hold the Shift key while turning the mouse scroll wheel. Pro Tools 7.3 also brings the comprehensive contextual menu system introduced with version 7.2 HD to LE users.

That was the reason for downgrading the OS. Pro Tools was a whole nother issue.when I was in 7.3.1 cs2 I was having some issues that couldnt be resolved. Apple+G (create new group) was not working.Apple+K (export selected region) was not working among other things. I was having major problems with kontakt at this time.I figured hey.this could be some conflict between protools and OS 10.4.9 making kontakt run so bad. So what you read above was my fix. Blastula, For me, the answer is simple. I never update as a reflex, I test some updates on my laptop before my music computer, and if all is well, I update.
Key signatures can be added, deleted and edited, and also imported and exported with MIDI data, which is especially useful when exporting MIDI sequences for use in notation programs like Sibelius. The default key signature setting is C-major. Key signatures can also be used for transposing in key or constraining pitches to the specified key, and again, we'll be looking at this feature in more detail in next month's workshop. * Send To Sibelius The 'Send to Sibelius' menu option is the first fruit of co-operation between Digidesign and their new stable-mates Sibelius Software, and enables you to export MIDI and Instrument tracks to Sibelius for further work. To send all MIDI and Instrument tracks to Sibelius, use the Send to Sibelius option in the File menu. If Sibelius or G7 is installed on your computer, it will launch, and you can then continue to edit the notation in Sibelius/ G7 and print a score or parts from your Session. To send a single Pro Tools Instrument or MIDI track to Sibelius, you right-click the track name in the Edit or Mix window and select Send to Sibelius from the pop-up menu.
This seems very promising since we usually have to wait some time for Avid to approve a new operating system. I’ll be diving deeper into Pro Tools and trying to uncover some glitches, if any exist, over the next few days. If I do discover any then I willl add them in the comments section. Of course if you’re currently working on an important project, I wouldn’t suggest upgrading to a beta OS. However, if you have time and energy to experiment once the beta ships then you should still be able to do some work. Thanks Steven for this report, it seems early indications may be promising.
A lock icon will then appear. Ctrl+click or Command+click the locked Shuffle button on screen to get back to normal. * Region-based Editing In Automation Views You can now perform certain Region-based edit commands and create fades whilst in automation views such as Volume Graph. The commands available in automation view include: Separate Region, Trim Region to Selection, Heal Separation and Create Fades. In addition, you can see the Fade and Crossfade shapes whilst you are in an automation view. This is brilliant, as I often get fed up of having to come out of Volume Graph mode just to tweak a fade. Two 'new' plug-ins are now bundled with Pro Tools 7.3.
The first is Fit To Window, which changes the selected track's height to fill the complete Edit window. You can also highlight a selection of tracks and use Fit To Window to get the complete selection to fill the Edit window. At the other extreme there is Micro, which is now the smallest track height possible and helps to give an overview of a large multitrack Session. Moreover, with Pro Tools 7.3 you can now continuously resize the height of any given track by simply clicking and dragging the lower edge of the track in the Track Controls column (above), or press and hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) while adjusting track height for continuous, non-incremental adjustments. To continuously resize all tracks, use Alt+click (Windows) or Option+click (Mac) and drag.
