Like Ally and Alliant, it has no minimum balance requirements for checking and savings accounts. It even rings in the second highest savings APY among our finalists, at up to 1.90%. Points to consider Limited customer support The main reason Discover isn’t higher up on our list is that it has poorer customer support than our other top picks. We couldn’t find an email address listed on its site, and you have to be a member to use its live chat function — which meant we couldn’t easily reach a rep while we were comparing accounts. Discover does have 24/7 phone support, which we appreciate, but it lacks the variety of channels that J.D.

Type-C ports can come in three basic power flavors, with more-powerful ports backward-compatible with the less-powerful flavors: • Legacy charging: up to 12 watts (2.4 amps / 5 volts), the same as traditional USB-A.

Even though battery gauges can be unreliable—many factors that impact exactly how much energy remains in a battery are constantly changing—the best power banks use a digital gauge that shows remaining energy as a percentage. We prefer this approach, but if a battery instead uses a small row of LEDs as a power meter, more LEDs means better accuracy. Warranty, service, and extras What we look for: • At least a 12-month warranty • A customer service response of less than a day (bonus points for phone support) • Quality cables, chargers, or cases included in the box Why it matters: • If any one part of a power bank fails—the charging ports stop working, the battery won’t hold a charge, the input power port fails—the one part can render the whole thing useless. A warranty and responsive customer service add real value if something goes wrong.
Bloomberg/Getty Images America’s top 15 largest banks In the years since the financial crisis, have grown substantially. All in all, the top 15 largest banks now hold a combined total of $13.2 trillion in assets. For a sense of the vast scale of that wealth, $13.2 trillion is enough to buy every one of the 7.6 billion human beings on Earth a 13-inch MacBook Pro, with a little left over for accessories.
In addition to its single USB-C port, the power bank includes two traditional USB-A ports, both of which can charge devices at the full 12 W that port traditionally allows, or up to 18 W for any device compatible with. Since larger batteries like the ZMI are best for charging gear when away from your desk or traveling, the extra fast-charging ports make our pick more versatile anytime you’re carrying more than one device that needs power. As with the other PD-capable models we tested, the ZMI raised no red flags in our safety tests, and it correctly charged all the devices that we tried to charge with it. The power required by USB-C laptops for maximum-speed charging varies. The 30 W USB-C PD–capable battery packs we tried can charge most of them, but bigger machines will charge more slowly.
The company also offers, a nice perk on top of the industry-standard email support options. Our pick for mobile devices: RAVPower 10000mAh Portable Charger with Type-C Port. If you have a phone or tablet with a USB-C port, the is the best power bank available. In our tests, it was able to charge devices at the full 15 W that standard USB-C ports are capable of, plus it adds an extra port for charging a second device over USB-A.
Like other familiar names like Anker and Goal Zero, the company backs its products with a pretty standard warranty. It covers failures for up to 18 months from purchase, including shipping fees for any replacements in the first six months. As a bonus, RAVPower will extend the warranty another 12 months if you, and it offers option. What to look forward to. Though most of us would consider USB battery packs to be personal electronic devices, you should assume that transportation authorities will regard the pack as a spare battery and subject it to more-stringent rules.
We also reached out to Total Phase, a company that creates testing and development tools for engineering and product firms, to help us check that all our picks correctly implement the USB-C protocol. Total Phase USB product manager Chris Yokum provided us with his company’s and helped us interpret our results using Total Phase’s Data Center software. (Though in the past we reviewed the work of and —independent engineers who have been testing USB-C product compliance—both have largely stopped publishing new test results and haven’t posted any reviews of USB-C power banks.) How we picked and tested. We researched nearly two dozen USB-C power banks and tested 14 of them to make our recommendations. Photo: Mark Smirniotis We’re constantly on the lookout for new USB-C–capable battery packs, scanning major retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy and staying on top of technology news. Though there are endless options for power banks with standard USB-A ports—the kind we’ve all used for years—there are far fewer power banks with USB-C ports to choose from (and even fewer good options).
The RAVPower includes a USB-C port that can charge other devices or be used to recharge the pack. If you have another device or older cables, standard Micro-USB and USB-A ports are included as well. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald If you’re just looking to charge a phone or tablet, but not a laptop, then almost all of the most promising USB-C power banks (including our pick) have a capacity around 37 Wh, or 10,000 mAh. It’s a good capacity for most situations—enough to charge most smartphones two or three times over, but it keeps the physical size small enough to be manageable. The is about the size of a Samsung Galaxy S8 or Google Pixel 2. That makes it a cinch to toss it in a laptop bag or backpack. Tucked next to a phone, it’s probably pushing the limit of even generous pockets in casual clothes, or a smaller purse.

The can charge a USB-C–powered laptop—including some of, like the MacBook Pro, Dell XPS 13, or Asus Chromebook Flip—as fast as any other power bank, and it’s smaller and lighter than. It has enough capacity to fully charge most 13-inch laptops at least one time or a smartphone five times or more. And when the power bank itself is drained, it can be recharged at nearly the same speed, cutting hours off the time it needs to be plugged in compared to most of the competition. It also has two USB-A ports for charging other devices—most competitors have only one—and when you don’t need to charge, you can use the ZMI as a USB hub instead, saving you the hassle of needing USB-C–to–A adapters for your mouse, flash drive, or camera. The offers the same fast, 45 W charging as our top pick, and it’s able to recharge itself at that speed too.
We checked how well each power bank could charge a laptop using a Total Phase USB Power Delivery Analyzer. Photo: Mark Smirniotis For the Power Delivery power banks intended to charge only smartphones and tablets, we used a USB programmable load that let us consistently draw the same amount of power as a real smartphone would. We wanted to see a full 15 W available, or 5 V / 3 A. Some USB-C chargers still use the charging levels of legacy USB-A ports, which are around 30 percent slower—a noticeable drop if you’re accustomed to a phone capable of charging faster. For power banks, we looked for a minimum output of 45 W. That’s enough to quickly charge most 13-inch laptops and slowly charge a laptop that wants 80 W—a 20 W or 30 W power bank will charge even a smaller laptop more slowly. (There are no power banks yet that can provide the 100 W maximum that the PD standard allows for—45 W is what’s currently available.
